I have been dying to write a post on this trend and to be honest I really don’t know what took me so long …. So without further delay let’s talk about the daring, midriff-baring trend, which seems to be all over the place, from the city streets to Red carpets straight from the Spring 2014 runways with a gut feeling that it’s here to stay for Summer too!!!! I must admit that I do love this springy/summery trend and if done right, the crop top can be sexy, chic, and sophisticated all at the same time. Yes I know, the trend is a tad too youngish but hey I say age is only a number. I know as well that many of us are far from being blessed with abdominals but hey the average women isn’t. But I firmly believe that if you want to give the trend a try, then go for it. If it makes you feel fabulous, then even better.
The beauty of women is that we come in all forms, sizes and shapes and if you are thicker but nonetheless you’re comfortable and confident with your curves, then by all means … do not hold back go for it …. just think Kim Kardashian and Mindy Kaling
Funny thing is that most stylists do seem to believe, that this is a look that most women can make it work for them. Reason being that most women are always trying to find the newest way to look sexy, yet smart and sophisticated. The rise of showing off the mid-riff seems to be coming from the fact that many of us are over the plunging necklines and the micro minis, so in comes the crop top which gives us the opportunity to show off a bit of skin while keeping it classy and updated.
One way to make this trend work and to do it properly is by pairing a crop top with a coordinating high-waisted midi pencil skirt for that chic, clean look – which happens to be my fave. If by any chance this might seem a bit risqué, please don’t, the skirt and top together will show only a bit of the tummy. This is a great way to embrace the trend without going overboard or feeling out of your comfort zone.
Here are some other tips her for you to make sure of wearing the crop top the right way…
Remember to be modest
Crop tops are daring enough so no mini skirts – remember Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. As per my personal fave go for high-waisted midi or skater skirt or alternatively a loose fitting tuxedo trouser. The perk for pairing your crop top with anything that is high-waisted – it’s easier to hide your tummy and your confidence will surely increase.
If you got them flaunt – yes those Curves
This trend is not just for super slim ladies. Us curvy girls can also rock them with pride. Look at Kimmy K, she has been wearing this look a lot lately, However, keep in mind that the overall look has to complement your figure – so make sure that everything fits well to avoid the unflattering look that could only add on inches.
Keep it Simple
Crop tops don’t need to bare all. A look to make your appearance more polished and sophisticated, especially for daytime I suggest going with a matching top and bottom from the same designer in the same color and fabrication giving the ensemble’ the illusion of being a dress with a small peek-a-boo affect. However do avoid this look for the office. Play it safe and save it for casual outings instead.
Always Aim for a Proper Fit
As I mentioned before, a modest skirt can be the perfect pairing for a crop top, but it’s crucial that your overall ensemble is the absolute perfect size for your body type. Pencil skirts should look smooth even when standing up straight. If there are bumps or rolls, the skirt is too tight. Go up a size. It will make sitting or getting in and out of a vehicle a much more pleasant experience.
Let Your Confidence Shine
You might feel that you have to have a tight tummy to feel bold enough to step out in a belly-baring crop top, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider this trend if you don’t have a so-called perfect shape. A pregnant Kerry Washington took the crop top and owned it in a major fantastic way and truly that’s the secret trick with most trends. If it fits you and you feel confident wearing it, then it will be pulled off seamlessly.
So there you have it! My take on the mid-riff baring – hope you enjoyed these tips and I hope that they have been of some help. I also hope you feel a little more confident about trying out the crop top trend – truthfully I even managed to convince myself!!!!
Until next time,
